Our Story

1967

THE BEGINNING

Back in 1967, we started hand-making packs on the second floor of an old transmission in Seattle. We didn’t really care. We just wanted them to hold up during our many outdoor adventures — and maybe we’d sell enough to avoid getting real jobs. Skip was our salesman, Murray designed the packs, and Murray’s girlfriend, Jan did the sewing. When Murray asked Jan to marry him, he said he’d name the company after her if she said ‘yes’. She did. And Jansport was born.

1971

THE FLOWER PACK

The launch of the D–Series. Originally designed for a Dhaulagri Two expedition in the Himalayas, the D–Series was desgined for all–year mountaineering and expediton treks.

1972

JANSPORT SUMMITS RAINIER

In the beginning, we were our own product testers. We figured if our packs could hold up on our yearly trips up Mount Rainier, one of the world’s most technically challenging mountains, then they were good enough to sell. Over the last 40 years, we’ve continued this tradition. We take our products up the mountain every year to learn a little more about making durable, functional packs. And we bring some friends along to party while we are up there.

THE ORIGINAL

Everyone wears a backpack now. Young. Old. Student. Professional. They’re a staple of any style. But before we released the Right Pack in the 70’s, backpacks were really just for hikers. When local students at the University of Washington started using our durable leather–bottom packs to hold their books, we became accidental style icons. That style quickly spread. Thirty–some years later, it’s a classic that’s been imitated by nearly every backpack brand.

1984

THE SUPERBREAK

JanSport creates the revolutionary standard for school bags and takes America by storm. One year later JanSport sells its one millionth day pack.

OUR PROMISE

JanSport has grown a bit since those early days in Seattle, but we’ve never strayed from our roots. And we never will. Our packs are designed for getting out and exploring. This is our life’s work, and we stand behind every stitch. So whether you bought a pack from us back in 1967 or 2016, if anything on your JanSport should break along your journey, send it to us and we’ll fix it for free. Guaranteed.

STILL EXPLORING

JanSport was born in the summer of love. It was a powerful time for music, art, and all forms of self–expression. Making these packs was our way of breaking free and doing our own thing. Today, we celebrate all forms of exploration and self–expression. The sounds and styles may have changed, but just like we did back in the 60’s, young people are always going to want to make their own way. And JanSport will be there along the Journey.
