Back in 1967, we started hand-making packs on the second floor of an old transmission in Seattle. We didn’t really care. We just wanted them to hold up during our many outdoor adventures — and maybe we’d sell enough to avoid getting real jobs. Skip was our salesman, Murray designed the packs, and Murray’s girlfriend, Jan did the sewing. When Murray asked Jan to marry him, he said he’d name the company after her if she said ‘yes’. She did. And Jansport was born.
